Professional Knowledge

The purpose of Professional Knowledge standard is to develop an understanding of the subject area as well as the developmental needs of the students and to demonstrate that understanding in a classroom.  This standard is important because it ensures that the students get taught by the teachers who have a deep knowledge and understanding of what they are teaching and why they are teaching?

I always ask these questions to myself before creating a lesson:

What do I teach?

How do I teach?

To whom do I teach?

Below are three of the many ways I demonstrated this standard during my time with the students:

a) Addressing appropriate curriculum standards in innovative ways.

b) Demonstrating the ability to link the content with real-world experiences and applications.

c) Demonstrating skills relevant to the subject area(s) taught.

I believe the most important skill for a teacher is to ensure that students keep their material organized in a way that is easily accessible to them. I always tried to find some ways in which students can feel independent in doing most of their daily work. I have tried to help them in keeping the notes organized and doing all the work neatly so that they can be able to read it later. This clip demonstrates some of the skills I used to keep them organized in math class.
